Robert Andrews came
from Norwich, Norfolk County, England early in 1635, as owner and
master of the ship "Angel Gabriel". Among other people who were seeking
religious freedom
were his three nephews, John, Thomas and Robert Burnham. The "Angel Gabriel" was
one
of the most powerful English warships in the port of Bristol.. It was a ship of 300 tons,
carrying an armament of 16 guns. The ship had already reached Pemaquid ME, about 50 miles
east of Portland, when suddenly a storm arose and the ship was broken in pieces and cast
away, cargo destroyed and several people lost their lives. Robert and his three nephews
were
saved and settled in the New World in Chebacco, MA (later Ipswich). Land records show his
house lot was on the south side of a river, possibly Chebacco Creek. It was near the South
Church. He was made free 6 May 1635. Ipswich records show that on 3 Sep 1635 Robert
Andrews licensed to keep an "ordinarye" (an inn). He was allowed to sell wine by
retail
"if he do not wittingly sell to such to abuse it by drunkenness". This is the
earliest reference
to a public house in the records of Ipswich. In his will he listed his wife, Elizabeth
Franklin,
his son in law , Daniel Hovey, or his child, Daniel Hovey. Also Andrews two sons, John and
Thomas Andrews. Besides his sons, he had two daughters, which no doubt died prior to his
will. They were Alice, who had married William Franklin and Abigail, who had married
Daniel Hovey. They are both buried at Ash Swamp Road, Ipswich, MA. Elizabeth, Robert's
wife, was born in Suffolk, England and died in Ipswich, MA buried in Ash Swamp Road
Cemetery.
