Greenleaf (1590-1671) Edmund was born in Ipswich, St. Mary's La-Tour, England. He and Sarah are buried at the First Burying Grounds, Newbury, MA. Sarah was born in Mauldin, England, All Saints Parish. Edmund and Sarah immigrated to Newbury, MA on the ship Mary and John. He was a "Freeman" March 13, 1638. He was a Silk-Dyer by trade. He was granted 122 acres and lived by the Old Town Bridge in Newbury. He had nine children born in England and their baptismal records appear on the Parish Records of St. Mary's La-Tour, Ipswich, England. Sketch of the History of Newbury, Newburyport and West Newbury by Coffin, we learn that in 1639 Edmund Greenleaf was an Ensign and allowed to keep a "House of Entertainment". The license for this "Ordinary" was transferred to his Son-In Law, Henry Sommerby. This makes descendants of Edmund Greenleaf eligible for membership in the lineage society "Flaggon and Trencher, Descendants of a Colonial Tavern Keeper". He was an Ensign in the Newbury Militia Company in 1639 and a Lieutenant 1642-1647. According to Ancestral Records and Portraits, his name was found in the first division of home lots.
