Hovey
Richard Hovey (1571-1637)
and wife
Richard lived at Waltham Abby, Essex, England. A story of the family appears in the Hovey
Book. Mr. W.H. Ticker was a member of the Hovey Association in the early 1900s. Also
see Founders of Early American Families by Colket. Richard was glover. He was buried at
Waltham Abbey and his wife was buried in 1653.

In the Ipswich antiquarian papers is a drawing of Daniel's house, supposed to have been
built in 1668, with this statement "The very ancient dwelling and wharf at the
northerly end of Turkey Shore were built and owned by Daniel Hovey, the ancestor of the
Ipswich Hoveys. He was in Ipswich as early as 1637 because in that year on September 27th
he testified that he married Abigail more than 40 years before." His name is often
mentioned in the town records as to buying land, felling trees and building permits for
fences, barns and dwellings. He also owned 3 acres of land on Plumb Island.

Daniel Hovey Jr. (1642-1695)

Esther Treadwell (1640-1730)
Daniel is mentioned in the will of his grandfather Robert Andrews and in the will of his
father Daniel Hovey Sr. He resided in Ipswich and was one of the administrators of the
estate of his uncle, Thomas Andrews, the school-master.

John Hovey
(1675-1720)
and wife (m. 1702)
Mehitable Safford ( - 1754)
John was born in Ipswich and died there and is buried in the Ancient Cemetery
Ash Swamp Road. She died and is buried in Bradford MA. John was a weaver by
trade and possessed a good estate, besides the home estate of a quarter acre with a
house and barn, a common right in Bush Hill and at Burch Island in Ipswich.

Samuel Hovey (1711-1786)
and wife (m. 1732)
Mary Ilsley (1707-1753)
Samuel was born in Ipswich but lived in Rowley, Byfield Parish, MA with his wife till she
died. Then he moved to Buxton ME in York Co. where he died in 1786. He was a house
carpenter and weaver. He built some of the first homes in Buxton and also their Meeting
House. Mary is buried in Byfield Parrish, MA.
